With temperatures reaching sub-zero temperatures in the Ozarks, there are many people that are experiencing frozen pipes in their homes. Water pipes that freeze are at risk of rupturing, leading to serious leaks and flooding. There are some ways to help prevent frozen water lines, and minimize plumbing and water damage to your home.

HOW TO: Help Prevent Frozen Water Lines

  1. Leave Cabinet Doors open under sinks.
  2. Leave water dripping from faucets in your home. It may be a good idea to have one faucet with hot water dripping and one faucet with cold water dripping, to ensure no water is stagnant in the system. If you have multiple floors, have a faucet dripping on each floor.
  3. Disconnect hoses from exterior faucets. There are foam insulators that you can buy to help insulate these fixtures.
  4. Leave Interior Doors open.
  5. Seal cracks and openings. When temperatures get this cold, it makes it easier to feel drafts around doors and windows

If you have a frozen pipe, contact a professional plumber to have your pipes thawed. Be sure to know where your water shut off is. Once a ruptured pipe thaws, it will then begin to leak.
